With the turkey and bread sauce

2000 Err zuriz La Escultura Estate Chardonnay, Casablanca Valley (£5.99, Safeway, Somerfield) Made in the cool climate area of the Casablanca Valley, this is one of Chile's most elegant Chardonnays with citrus fruit, butter and a hint of toast beautifully combined on the palate. A good alternative to white Burgundy.

2000 Domaine de Montplaisir Cabernet Franc, Vin de Pays d'Oc (£4.97, Asda) The Languedoc isn't the first (or second, or even third) place you'd expect to find Cabernet Franc, but this is delicious stuff. Dark, youthful, grassy and full of blackcurrant fruit, like a turbo-charged Chinon. Beef and mince pies

2000 Valdivieso Barrel Selection Syrah (£5.99, Tesco) The latest example of the progress Syrah has made in the last five years in Chile. Valdivieso's reds always deliver value for money in the bottle and this soft, spicy, smoky oaky red is typical of the house style.

1998 Stormberg Cabernet/Shiraz(£6.99, Sainsbury's) Another excellent value New World red, this time from South Africa. The combination of Shiraz and Cabernet gives this minty, oaky wine more bite and tannin.

Pheasant

2000 Oxford Landing Merlot (£5.49, Morrison's, Tesco, Wine Rack, Bottoms Up, Thresher) One of a number of commendably reliable wines from the Oxford Landing set up, this is a comparatively restrained Aussie red with flavours of plums and chocolate, a sheen of vanilla oak and ripe tannins.

1999 Spar Crozes Hermitage (£6.29) It's worth a trip to your local Spar just to get your hands on this delicious Rhône red. A dark, brooding Syrah which combines masses of cherry and blackberry fruit with aromas of violets and a whiff of the spice cupboard.

Baked squash with wild rice and mushrooms

2000 Catarratto Barrique (£4.99, Marks & Spencer) One of the stranger whites I've tasted recently, but don't let that put you off because the flavours are delicious in this nutty, oaky, fennel and liquorice-scented Sicilian curiosity. A lot of character.

2001 Fairleigh Estate Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough (£6.99, Majestic; buy two save £2) The prices of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc aren't always reasonable, but this shows you how distinctive this grape can be. Crisp, taut and grassy with a finish that lasts.
