I am not going to pretend that Orchids is cutting edge or the find of the decade. But among the McDonald's, Starbucks and other riff-raff, it stands out like a good deed in a naughty world. You'll find it, and the cheery folk who work there, tucked away in a wing of Gloucester cathedral. There are sandwiches (toasted and untoasted), snacks, cakes, scones, all properly and genuinely made on the premises; excellent coffee and tea. And each day a few specials - soups, steak and ale, meat pie, ratatouille, quiche - are offered, all around the £5-£6 mark. And you won't complain about the quantity, which is generous in the extreme. Heavy-gravity puds, good bottled beer and wine.
