Tamara Mellon on the world of private dining

'I can't bear those modern, minimalist places; they do nothing for me. I hate eating in sparse, clinical surroundings; I prefer a more intimate, cosy atmosphere. For that reason, I would say that Drones Club [members only] is one of my favourite restaurants in London. The interior is not overwhelming and the service is excellent. I always order the crab salad followed by calves liver. I also like Harry's Bar [members only], for the same reason: the service is good and the atmosphere unimposing.

If I am having lunch at my desk I will get a box of sushi. I have been on the Atkins diet for six months, so I don't do sandwiches. If I have a lunch meeting I will go to Daphne's because the service is always reliable. Otherwise George [Mark Birley's private dining club in London's Mayfair] is good. I love the atmosphere there - it's casual but smart. I'm not madly keen on places such as the Wolseley or the Ivy as I find it very hard to plan ahead and waiting lists kill the pleasure of going out.

For dinner I usually go somewhere relaxed and cosy, like San Lorenzo. The owners, Mara and Lorenzo are like parents to me and I always feel at home the moment I walk through the door. Last year I took over the whole restaurant and had a dinner for 160 friends.

When I was young, my parents would take me to the South of France for six weeks every summer. We would always go for lunch at Club 55, which is just like San Lorenzo, only on the beach. I'm not madly into bars and clubs, but I do like to pop into Boujis and Dave de Rothschild's club night, Wrong, will always guarantee a girl a good time. I enjoy hanging out at [private club] Annabel's if it's for someone's party.

When I'm in LA I love going to Fred Segal, it's cool and casual and has a real buzz, and I love the Ivy there - it's completely different from the one in London, much more relaxed with everyone sitting outside. I always go to LA for the Oscars - we dress the feet of many a film star during that one very mad, manic week. When I'm in New York I like Cipriani, either uptown or downtown, and Le Bilboquet on Madison Avenue. If I'm skiing in Gstaad, I like to go for lunch at the Carlyle Club, it's nice and cosy. And in Ibiza, I recommend Torres for lunch and Los Dos Lunas for dinner - both are beautiful.'
