The Fish And Chip Shop
226 High Street, Aldeburgh, Suffolk, 01728 452250
The finest chippie in Suffolk, and quite possibly the universe. Not to be confused with the Golden Galleon down the road: just check the relative queue size. Next door to the White Hart, where you can get stuck into the Adnams before blundering off for fish and chips. In the chippie, if you can pass Brenda's street vetting procedures, you may become a privileged customer.

4 Street Fish & Chips
26-28 Merchant House, Fore Street, Ipswich, 01473 222286
Fish and chips at their very best - whether eating in the restaurant-style dining room of this glorious medieval merchant's house or picking up a takeaway. Eating in gives the benefit of washing down the food with a perfect pint of Warsteiner or a glass from the good-value wine list. In the unlikely event that you have room, finish with one of the superb homemade puddings. Perfect fish and chips in beautiful surroundings at chip-shop prices.

French's Fish Shop
10 The Quay, Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, 01328 710396
It's fish and chips for me, from 'French' at Wells on the quay. Such a bore when the queue's out the door, but well worth the wait, you'll see. Open or wrapped? Eat in or take out? Cod, plaice or rock salmon? Mine's haddock, no doubt. Divine, crispy batter, lips greased by chips. Mmm. Watching that waistline? What does it matter! When you're this way, enjoy French's fish and chips (closed Monday to go fishing).

Plenty of chippies serve acceptable fish but soggy chips. Here, however, you get a beautifully battered fillet of cod on a bed of goodie-studded pease pudding and a portion of immaculate chips for £11.95. Go in daytime for the stunning view across the saltings.

As fitting a place as any to eat fish and chips. Look north to the crumbling cliffs and sea defences, or south to the beach huts and, on a clear day, the Sizewell nuclear reactor beyond. Light, crisp batter, meltingly good cod, a mountain of real chips, tea or a selection of Adnams ales and wines. Perfection doesn't come any closer.

The interior may be sparse, but the chalkboard tells you all you need to know. My stomach contracts with anticipation as a huge piece of battered fish is scooped out then topped with the largest portion of medium chips I've ever seen. The first bite is heaven as the sizzling hot batter and piping flakes of fresh fish melt in the mouth. The flavours run over the tongue, making every taste bud sit up. At under a fiver, there's plenty of change for the bus home, too.
