There is a restaurant, but bar meals include the likes of rabbit pie and steak and kidney pud. A wide range of real ale, cider and perry. Less pretentious than London gastropubs, not least because, despite the fine food, it is still a pub.

Stylish, friendly and huge portions. After king prawns with chilli and char-grilled rib eye of beef, hand-cut chips and superb béarnaise, I couldn't have eaten any more. Add proper real ale, and it's a pleasure to eat here.

Heston Blumenthal of Fat Duck fame runs this fantastic pub up the road. But there's no snail porridge, just pub grub - Scotch eggs, potted shrimps, Lancashire hotpot - albeit done to a standard you'd scarcely think possible.
