Three south-east Asian locals

The Siam Orchid
21 High Street, Carshalton, Surrey, 020-8669 2828

The menu is extensive, with a wide choice for vegetarians, and very reasonably priced - lunch with drinks is less than £10. The food looks so good you don't know whether to eat it or photograph it. Eat it, I say.

Phat 8
14-16 Wheeler Gate, Nottingham, 0115 979 9188

Vibrant, fresh, healthy - in fact, just what Vietnamese tucker ought to be - with the odd Chinese dish thrown in for good measure. Go for one of the big bowls of noodle soup. Good value, too, especially the £8 set lunch deal.

Yum Yum
183 Stoke Newington High Street, London N16, 020-7254 6751

The enticing wafts from the kitchen invariably lure me in. Thai curries hit that exact balance between sweet, sour and spicy, king prawns are worthy of the name, as is the Yum Yum special. A comfy, cosy gem of a place.
