Three more places to dine with history.

The George Vaults 35 High Street, Rochester, Kent, 01634 817165

A modern brasserie built atop a 13th-century vault that acted as a safe house for soldiers fleeing fights up at the castle. Good, fresh food, £8-£15 for a two-course lunch, plus a setting that's Rochester's attempt at a plush city bar.
Jay-James May
Gravesend, Kent

The Marsh Cat 1 Mostyn Square, Parkgate, Wirral, 0151-336 1963

Imaginative modern, continental cuisine for all tastes on the front of an old seaport steeped in history from Nelson's day. An excellent choice of superbly presented dishes and a homely atmosphere.
John Brignal
Neston, Cheshire

The Great House Market Place, Lavenham, Suffolk, 01787 247431

An old timbered house (probably 15th-century) in an amazing old Suffolk wool town. Fine local fare freshly cooked. The cheese board is a wonder in itself. The whole experience is rather special.
Clare Morris
Great Saling, Essex
