Sliced white

Marks & Spencer organic, 800g, £1.09

Good flavour, soft crust and a firm texture. Lovely for both sandwiches and toast. Very nice.

4 stars

Co-op truly irresistible, 800g, 79p

This is a really good white sandwich bread. It's got a little bit of character and a nice texture.

4 stars

Sainsbury's taste the difference, 800g, 88p

It's OK, but nothing special. Very bog standard. And it's a little dry.

2 stars

Hovis classic white, 800g, 94p

A typical white sliced bread with a plain flavour. Decent soft texture.

2 stars

Warburtons all in one thick, 800g, £1.05

I wouldn't buy this myself. It's quite dull and it's got no character. Actually, it's just dry and tasteless.

1 star

Wholemeal

Staff of Life Bakery omega, 800g, £2.50, 01539 738606

Lovely! This is my idea of wholemeal bread. Dense, flavoursome and robust with a slight bitterness to it.

5 stars

Allinson, 800g, £1.02

A light wholemeal bread with a nice flavour, that's not too savoury. Crumbly.

3 stars

M&S organic, 800g, £1.25

It's got a real bran-flavour and it tastes like it would be fibre-rich and good for you. Great for sandwiches.

3 stars

Kingsmill, 800g, 88p

The flavour is sweet and malty, good moisture. You can use it for sandwiches as well as toast.

3 stars

Tesco finest crusty stoneground, 800g, 88p

It looks good and has a great texture, but it really doesn't have a lot of flavour. Disappointing.

2 stars

Rolls

M&S organic seeded batch, 290g, £1.29

Like a fancy looking bap. Great texture, flavour and seed content.

5 stars

Warburtons wholemeal, 80p for three

Very soft, but good flavour and bran on top.

4 stars

Waitrose poppy knot, 99p for four

I like the texture - almost cake-like. The flavour is fine, too.

4 stars

Co-op truly irresistible seeded deli, 85p for four

Texture of a white roll, but it tastes wholemealy, which is nice.

3 stars

Tesco soft white, 39p for six

A very ordinary white roll. It's fine, but not exciting. The texture is too fluffy and the flavour is too sweet.

2 stars

Ciabattas

vWaitrose with olives, £1.39 for two

Bread has good aeration, olives and nice crust.

5 stars

Tesco finest plain, £1.29 for one

Good crust and a great spongy and dense texture. The flavour is pleasant, too.

4 stars

Loyd Grossman, £1.88 for three, available: Asda

The flavour is good, you can taste it's a ciabatta, but it's not crusty enough.

3 stars

M&S, 270g, £1.29

The texture is great, airy and soft, but the flavour is rather neutral. It's a bit bland, actually.

2 stars

Sainsbury's taste the difference with Aegan tomatoes, £ 2.29 for two

Tastes overly yeasty and doughy. It's too dense and not very crusty.

1 star

Baguettes

M&S French, 260g, 69p

Lovely colour. Appearance and taste is as close to an authentic French baguette as possible. Very good indeed.

5 stars

Tesco stonebaked, 79p for one

Nice and chewy. The flavour and internal texture are lovely.

4 stars

Asda, 400g, 74p

A baguette should be crusty on the outside and fluffy on the inside. This one just doesn't fit the bill. It's too large and doughy.

1 star

Baker St. homebake organic brown, 99p for two, available: Sainsbury's

Perfectly pleasant, but there is just nothing baguettish about it.

1 star

Sainsbury's taste the difference, 400g, 79p

This is just dry, white bread in a baguette shape. Tastes mass-produced.

1 star

Pittas

Sainsbury's with mixed olives, 85p for six

Flavoursome. Although the dried herbs taste cheap, they still add flavour. The olives and texture are good.

4 stars

Loyd Grossman, 89p for six, available: Asda

Lovely flavour. Sweet and savoury at the same time and it splits easily, as pitta should.

4 stars

Somerfield white, 39p for six

It's got a really nice aroma and the texture is good, like a typical pitta.

4 stars

Tesco white, 34p for six

Pleasant sweet flavour and it splits nicely. Texture is a bit doughy, though.

3 stars

M&S white, 460g, 89p for eight

Smells more like a scone than bread, but it tastes fine. Quite thick.

3 stars

Bagels

New York Bagel Co. cinnamon & raisin, £1.19 for five

This is the perfect bagel. The cinnamon and raisin flavour is great.

5 stars

M&S multiseed, 400g,£1.29

Earnest but tasty. Not a Brick Lane bagel, but it's very good with a great savoury flavour.

4 stars

Tesco, £1.09 for five

Looks good, but it's very sweet. The crust is too rough and it splits, which shouldn't happen.

2 stars

Asda with raisins, 98p for four

Like an American doughnut with a fruit bread crust. It's got a nice gloss to it and a good texture, though.

2 stars

Breads with grains or seeds

Artisan Bread Original deli wheat 7 grains, 400g, £1.80, artisanbread-abo.com

Rich and natural with a nice sourness to it. Lovely texture, too.

5 stars

Tesco stonebaked seeded buckwheat boule, 400g, £1.49

Great tasty crust. Sweet and savoury with lots of character.

5 stars

Sainsbury's multiseed taste the difference, 800g, 99p

Nice and malty with lots of seeds. But I don't like the spongy, doughy texture.

3 stars

Asda +12 grains, 400g, 78p

Very nice grains and the flavour is fine. But the bread itself is far too fluffy. I prefer it dense.

2 stars

Duchy Originals mixed seeds, 400g, £1.45 widely available

Too white for me.

2 stars

Rye breads

Mestermacher organic, 500g, 99p, widely available

Nice and sour with a hint of sweetness. It's got lots of texture, moist, compact and crumbly.

5 stars

Bolletje German style organic, 400g, £1.09, widely available

Slightly gingery. A bit dry and crumbly. Great.

5 stars

Waitrose organic German recipe, 800g, £1.69

Delicate and easy to eat. It's good, but I like them more robust.

3 stars

Artisan bread original St John's, 400g, £1.65

It looks fantastic, but it needs some salt and it's waxy on the tongue.

1 star

Staff of Life Bakery deli rye, 800g, £2.50

Not your typical rye bread. Good for rye-bread beginners. I don't personally like it.

1 star

Bread with an unusual ingredient

Staff of Life Bakery pecorino and red onion, 400g, £2.50

Very pleasant. It tastes natural and has a nice crust. The ingredients work well.

4 stars

Warburtons fruit loaf with orange, 400g, £1.15, widely available

Smells like Easter, kids will love it. Good fruit/bread ratio.

3 stars

Soreen fruity malt loaf, 200g, 78p, widely available

Very strange thing, I wonder who buys this. But it's nice, rich and really sticky, almost like toffee.

3 stars

M&S pumpkin honey loaf, 400g, £1.49

Good pumpkin seeds, but I can't really taste the honey. The bread itself is so-so, but nice crust.

2 stars

Artisan bread original vege bake, £1.90 for five slices

Very macrobiotic. Good texture, but tastes too oniony.
