What do you drink at home
Verdejo Palacio de Bornos, Rueda (white), and Gran Feudo rosado, Navarro (rosé)

Why The white is 100 per cent verdejo from Rueda, and this wine in particular is delicate and crisp. Enjoy it with anything from simple pasta dishes to sushi or spicy prawns. The rosé is lovely, with red berries and strawberries in the nose, and fruits like cherries, blackberries and a hint of white pepper in the palate. Enjoy it with oily fish like salmon, trout or, even better, a nice paella.

What do you drink at home Mantel blanco, Rueda (white), and Pittacum, Bierzo (white)

Why The first is a verdejo-sauvignon blend and it's just really nice. It goes fantastically with fish. The Pittacum has lovely herbal notes, I first had it in Bierzo at the bodegas and just loved it. It's sublime.

What Amontillado secco Napoleon (sherry) and Gine Gine Priorat, Buil Gine, 2004 (red)

Why The sherry is a great aperitif, although it's also very good with food. It's terribly moreish, and best served nice and chilled. The red is the only Spanish red I've found that works well chilled, which is something I'm rather a fan of. It's juicy and succulent.

What Alaia, Dehesa de Rubiales 2002 (red), Conde de Valdemar blanco 2003 (white), and Marques de Murrietta blanco reserva, Capellania 2001 (white)

Why The Alaia is a blend of the rare and whacky Prieto Picudo grape and tempranillo, so it's a delicious richly fruity and lightly oaked red. The Conde de Valdemar is a barrel-fermented white rioja which retains its freshness and acidity while benefiting from a roundness of vanilla flavours. The Murietta is a legendary white rioja and quite a contrast to the Conde de Valdemar. This is very big, intense and oaky - a real beast of a white. You'll either love it or hate it but don't say you haven't been warned!

What Bodegas Castro Martin Albarino A20 (white) and Casa de la Ermita Monastrell organic (red)

Why The Albarino is one of my favourite wines, it's stunning. Albarino is a bit of a new grape for most people and this is a great example. It's bone dry but velvety and goes brilliantly with pork dishes like chorizo or fabada stew. If it's really cold then it's great with shellfish or salt cod. The red Monastrell is from a very modern winemaker. It's peppery with sweet vanilla and is absolutely cracking with Sunday roasts, especially beef.

What Naia Verdejo, Rueda 2004, Cyan Toro 2003 (red), and Planots 2001 (red), Priorat

Why Naia is a crisp and completely perfect verdejo and has aromas of pears, anise, honeysuckle and minerals. It is vibrant and nervy, and is great with grilled fish and shellfish. For red, the 2003 vintage of Toro wines is fantastic, even the smaller co-op wines that I've tried are great to drink. The Cyan, however, is in a different league. I would drink this wine with a paella they cook inland in Jumilla, where they use all the game they can hunt on their vineyards. Something with rabbit, quail, snails and a deep, rich meat stock. It's impossible to select my three favourite value wines without choosing a wine from the Priorat. Incredibly dark and mysterious, this wine is only just ready to drink, but is an absolute beauty. This wine isn't inexpensive, but it's absolutely worth it.
