1. Schmalznudel
Situated on the beautiful Viktualienmarkt, this friendly place specialises in Schmalznudel — Bavaria´s highly recommended version of the doughnut. Try it with a coffee or a glass of German bubbly (Sekt) in an attempt to delay the on-coming hangover.
· Prälat-Zistl-Str. 8, 80331 Munich, +49 89 268237. Open 5am to 5pm

2. Bergwolf
Started by a couple of music biz insiders who thought Munich had everything going for it apart from an outlet for the nation's fast food favourite — Currywürst, which is bite-sized slices of sausage smothered in a curry sauce. Now you have to join the queue to get served. There's a bar and simple wooden tables should you choose to eat in. After midnight it gets seriously hip (for the locals at least).

U-Bahn: Frauenhoferstrasse
3. Schlemmermeyer at the Viktualienmarkt
A good way to get fast and good food in Munich is to nip into a butcher´s shop and point at what you want. Schlemermeyer is a small chain, but it is an open secret that their best stall is on the Viktuallienmarkt. They serve great cooked and smoked sausages and if you are feeling braver, you could try the Leberkäs – a type of meatloaf in a bread roll. Only open on market days (Mon-Fri from 10am to 6pm and Saturday from 10am to 3pm). The market is also great place to stock up on cakes.

4. Riva
There are many great Italian restaurants in Munich, but Riva serves the best pizza in the city. You'll have to fight your way through the crowd at the front bar to get to a slice though.

5. Kaimug
Reasonably priced - just €7 for a red curry - and very tasty fast-food Thai that's also worth the visit just to see the great 5 Höfe shopping gallery. Sit at the window and watch the whole world shop by.

7. Hofbraukeller am Wiener Platz
Not to be confused with the world famous tourist trap the Hofbrauhaus, this is a little away from the centre, but is a typical Munich bierkeller with a great biergarten if you are lucky with the weather. And the Schnitzel at €5 a throw is also an incentive to visit.

U-Bahn: Max-Weber Platz
8. Pfälzer Weinstube
A bizarre place in the middle of the most expensive area of Munich. But if you fancy a break from the beer, this is where you should come for its huge cellar of fine wines. It started out being subsidised by the regional Pfälz government in an attempt to promote their wine and feed their students based in the city. Food is hearty: think lots of pork, potatoes and cream.
· Residenzstrasse 1, 80333 Munich, +49 89 225628
U-Bahn: Odeonsplatz
9. Nürnberger Bratwurst Glöckl
If you're a sausage fan and want to bite into a prime bit of Bavaria, but your time is limited, try this place. It's been a restaurant since 1893 and the old building is warm and cosy inside. Sausages and Sauerkraut are highly recommended.

A traditional Bavarian "mom and pop" establishment that serves great value, homemade Bratwurst and sauerkraut cooked over a beechwood fire. Just a stone's throw from the lively Viktualienmarkt.
