We’d got back from holiday the day before,” says Sarah Freethy of the photo of her then three-and-a-half-year-old daughter Esme in their back garden in Easton, outside Winchester. “It was sunny, so I thought we’d have a picnic in the garden. It was a basic meal – Esme likes chopped up food, sticks of celery and cucumber – but the light was lovely and she was giggling and mucking around.”
A part-time executive producer in TV, Sarah describes herself as a prolific camera-phone photographer: “I take way too many photos of my daughter, cake and the countryside. I do occasionally get told to put the phone away.” She recently started a blog called Peony & Praxis, celebrating seasonal traditions such as preserving. “The image sums up food and the joy of eating for me. But it’s the situation that makes it, more than anything.”
