Milan, 2 High Street, Woller, Northumberland, 01668 281309

Tastefully converted from the stables of an old coaching inn, this welcoming restaurant serves good, Italian-influenced modern British cooking, sourced locally when possible and at very modest prices.
JR Bell
Bury, Lancashire

Quod, 92-94 High Street, Oxford, 01865 202505

With a menu offering classic starters and salads, hugely satisfying mains of seafood or meat, bargain side orders, impressive wines, this remains one of Oxford's must-experience dining institutions.
David Healey
Oxford

The Miners Arms, Oakstedge Lane, Milltown, Derbyshire, 01246 590218

In spite of the name, this is not a pub but an extremely good restaurant serving fresh, modern British cuisine at reasonable prices - £8 to £9 for a main course. Wonderful desserts, too.
Christine Jones
Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire
