Readers' Award
1 Anthony's, Leeds
2 Gordon Ramsay, London
3 Terre a Terre, Brighton
1 When The Observer's food critic paid his first visit last April, he was bowled over by the talents of the young chef. The restaurant - an upstairs bar and basement dining area - is a simple affair but then everyone goes for Anthony Flinn's amazing food.
· Anthony's, 19 Boar Lane, Leeds (0113 2455922)
2 With another TV show on the way, some wondered whether he'd piled his plate too high, but this award demonstrates that Gordon Ramsay remains a dedicated chef of exceptional talent. His eponymous restaurant has remained at the top of its game since opening in 1998 and is one of only three UK restaurants to hold three Michelin stars - deservedly so for dishes such as sautéed loin of venison with creamed cabbage and bitter chocolate sauce, and roasted tranche of foie gras with caramelised endives, carrot puree and Sauternes jus. The restaurant, like the food, is discreetly elegant and remains a hot destination for dedicated foodies.
· Gordon Ramsay, 68 Royal Hospital Road, London SW3 (020 7352 4441)
3 The risk of mentioning that this two-time OFM-awarded restaurant is vegetarian is the unfavourable assumption so often made about meat-free restaurants: that they will be wholesome, worthy and heavy on obscure pulses. Not Terre à Terre. Amanda Powley and Phillip Taylor have worked hard to make their meat-free status secondary to innovative, intelligent cooking. The result is that truffled Jerusalem artichoke risottto served with peppered pecorino is conspicuous only for its deft handling of seasonal flavours, and griddled onion and potato flatbread dashed with rocket pesto and topped with minted grilled feta, kalamata tapanade and tzatziki simply doesn't need to be added to. The aim of Terre à Terre has never been to convert the carnivores, rather to serve exciting, creative food at fair prices.
