Pina Coladas, piano lounging and a 6am licence – the best bars of 2005

Double Seven | The Piano Bar | Mojo | First Floor Bar | Green & Red Bar and Cantina | Origin at Hospital | The Woods | Trailer Happiness

Double Seven
418 West 14th Street, New York

Currently the coolest bar in the whole of the tres cool Meatpacking District of Manhattan. Sophie Dahl, Padma Lakshmi, Jacquetta Wheeler - they've all had parties there. So hot it might scorch your eyelashes.

The Piano Bar
Bovey Castle, North Bovey, Devon

Big fat, recently regenerated posh country house type effort in the middle of Dartmoor. I love a piano bar, because it affords me the opportunity to sprawl across it in an unseemly fashion in the early hours of the morning.

Mojo
18 Merrion Street, Leeds & 19 Back Bridge Street, Manchester

Two bars for the price of one, darlings. Mojo describes itself as a rock'n'roll cocktail bar, other people (who have the Cocktail Girl's ear) describe it as 'simply the best bar in Leeds/Manchester.'

First Floor Bar
Harvey Nichols, Dundrum Town Centre, Sandyford Road, Dublin

A recently launched effort which in the grand tradition of Harvey Nichols bars, has become a focus for all manner of chic socialising. I must go again and enhance the scene with my fragrant presence.

Green & Red Bar and Cantina
Bethnal Green Road, London

Possibly the world's first ever chic Mexican, Green & Red's associated bars (all three of them) offer a mind-blowing range of rare tequilas. It might even get me over my tequila aversion and stop me having flashbacks to a certain lost fortnight.

Origin at Hospital
Endell Street, Covent Garden, London

One of those modern democratic venues that bridges the gap between members bar and bar-that's-open-to-the-general-public. While Hospital is private, Origin isn't, so it's got that veneer of chic exclusivity without any of the sneering.

The Woods
1 Park Street Avenue, Bristol

An Elbow Room-affiliated venture, with a courtyard garden, a big whisky collection , and a cash-in-on-new-licensing-laws style 6am weekend licence! Just imagine what debauchery opportunities that could afford.

Trailer Happiness
177 Portobello Road, London

Not actually new but it is good, and I haven't been this year, but I should have, so it qualifies. It's a self-styled 'retro-sexual haven of cosmopolitan kitsch', all vol-au-vents and Pina Coladas and occasional unreconstructed bachelor boys. Yummy.
