The Pipe And Glass Inn, West End, South Dalton, Beverley, East Yorkshire, 01430 810246

Chef James Mackenzie delivers a tempting local menu, while partner Kate keeps the front-of-house ticking. Add accessible prices and thoughtful wine list, and this is a genial haven.

London NW1

The Felin Fach Griffin, Felin Fach, Brecon, 01874 620111

Still, blessedly, a pub, albeit one with a dining room serving opulent, grown-up food alongside more simple but just as tasty fare. The wine list is comprehensive, the service informal but efficient. Top notch, in other words.

The Five Bells Wood Street, Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, 01793 849422

A proper, old-style boozer with a great range of immaculately kept real ale and cider that just happens also to serve the most fabulous pub grub with style and a smile. If only my local was like this...
