Modern British in Yorkshire

The Pipe And Glass
West End, South Dalton, East Yorkshire, 01430 810246

Choose from, for example, goats' cheese or black pudding, followed by braised deer, or cheddar and wild mushroom omelette. Imaginative yet uncomplicated accompaniments make this tempting English cookery. Chef James Mackenzie, formerly of the Michelin-starred Star Inn at Harome, creates a compact menu of locallysourced dishes. Contemporary decor, accessible prices, a thoughtful wine list, pleasing grounds and accommodation combine to make this a genial haven.

Not the place for fussy eaters - the food has unexpected ingredients (peeled rhubarb alongside potato; sorbet with shellfish) and courses are preceded by the surprise of a creative entremets. But at the heart of the playfulness are dishes firmly based on good meat or fish, simply cooked. The tastes are clean and distinct, service is informal but attentive. The dining room may be a bit austere, but the atmosphere is far from reverential - every plate brings excitement and laughter.

The reasonably priced menu provides all sorts of options, from mini steak and kidney pudding starters to a range of fish and salad dishes, succulent steaks and daily specials. The gourmet burgers are particularly popular, and there is plenty of choice for vegetarians. My favourite is a Sunday brunch ofwaffles, delicious homemade granola, tasty eggs Florentine and wholesome omelettes. A little taste of Hollywood in Hull.

This menu celebrates British classics while embracing culinary innovation. On our last visit, we had salad of smoked and poached haddock that left us hungry for more. I then had lamb chops with reform sauce - a finer plate of meat and potatoes I have never enjoyed. That said, I was compelled to steal forkfuls of my partner's pork 'T-bone' with English asparagus, which was equally fabulous. As full as we were, we managed to share a chocolate sponge with Guinness punch ice-cream. Quality British food - or, as we say in Yorkshire, reet good nosh.

Sometimes the best places are the hardest to find - this is up a narrow lane in the cleft of a hillside. The recent introduction of a fixed-price menu means that, for £11.95, you can choose from four starters, including salad of crab, avocado and celeriac with pimento sorbet and faggot of spiced duck with plum sauce. Four mains include suckling pig and chorizo sauté, and black olive hash brown with goats' cheese croquette and tomato butter. All this and a relaxed vibe in an old stone building overlooking one of Yorkshire's lushest valleys.

The inventive menu includes traditional fare - roast saddle of rabbit, belly pork, guinea fowl - with a fusion of global influences such as tempura, bruschetta, samosas. All are served with interesting sauces or unusual vegetable creations, such as muscat grapes and ceps in a Pinot Grigio cream.
